Evaluations

At Kirkpatrick Speech, Language, and Learning, our evaluations are tailored to address any concerns you may have about your child's communication development. While every evaluation is different, your child's first session may include standardized testing, informal assessments, observations, or conversational interviews with students, parents, and teachers. We will then follow up with our recommendations for the next best step.

Therapy

Our speech, language, and literacy therapy sessions are anything but stressful. We hide the hard work of therapy in activities that interest your child, like board games or Nerf gun wars! Our therapy sessions are generally 30 or 45 minutes long to include time for focused instruction, skill practice, and discussions about your child's accomplishments. Parents are always welcome to get involved in speech therapy sessions.

Literacy & Dyslexia Therapy

What We Work on in Literacy Intervention & Dyslexia Therapy

Literacy therapy will increase your child's success and confidence with language-based academic tasks like reading, spelling, and writing.

At Kirkpatrick Speech, Language, and Learning, sessions are designed to account for your child's unique strengths and needs. Our literacy therapy sessions may focus on rhyming, breaking words into syllables and sounds, blending sounds together to make words, understanding prefixes and suffixes, processing what is read, and communicating effectively through writing.

Why Work on Reading & Writing with a Speech Therapist?

Speech therapists are experts in language — which includes listening, speaking, reading, and writing! Unlike working with a reading tutor, we use highly specialized approaches to dive into all areas of language. Our goal is to address gaps in your child's foundational knowledge while building higher-level literacy skills for academic success.

We know that there is no single approach that works best for every child. With advanced training in dyslexia and structured reading interventions, we will create a customized plan for your child.

Signs Your Child Will Benefit from Support from a Dyslexia Specialist

Your child will benefit from tailored reading intervention if they have a diagnosis of dyslexia or struggle with any of the following literacy skills:

  • Making letter-sound associations

  • Phonological awareness (rhyming, blending sounds to form words, breaking up syllables, etc.)

  • Reading fluently without struggle or frustration

  • Understanding what they read and gaining new vocabulary

  • Communicating ideas through written language

 Executive Function Skills Therapy

Signs of an Executive Functioning Disorder

Executive functioning skills are the building blocks for success in school, life, and social situations. If your child struggles with any of the following, specialized therapy can help:

  • Staying focused on a task without getting distracted

  • Working on a task until it is finished

  • Setting goals and taking steps to reach them

  • Planning, organizing, and initiating tasks

  • Completing and turning in homework on time

  • Evaluating their own performance

  • Time management

  • Regulating emotions

How Skilled Therapy Can Help Your Child Develop Executive Functioning Skills

Whether your child has a learning disability, a diagnosis of ADD/ADHD, or simply demonstrates challenges with organization, we will give them strategies to boost their independence and self-confidence!

Executive functioning therapy focuses on strengthening your child's internal language, which is necessary for organization, planning, time management, sustained focus, and emotional regulation.  Your child will learn and practice strategies to help them manage their academic work and complete everyday life tasks on their own.

Speech & Language Therapy

What We Work on in Speech Therapy

Speech therapy focuses on supporting your child's speech sound development — which, ultimately, improves their ability to speak, read, and spell!

At Kirkpatrick Speech, Language, and Learning, we use evidence-based approaches to improve your child's speech skills, resulting in clearer pronunciation, more effective communication, and improved self-confidence.

What We Work on in Language Therapy

The goal of language therapy is to help your child understand what they hear or read, and successfully communicate their ideas through spoken and written language.

At Kirkpatrick Speech, Language, and Learning, your child will gain the skills needed to follow directions, answer questions, explain steps, use new vocabulary, engage in successful conversations, and communicate in social situations.
