Frequently Asked Questions
Is an evaluation required before services can begin?
In most cases, yes. The evaluation may be an informal assessment consisting of interviews, checklists, and a review of work samples, or it may be a more formal assessment using a standardized test. The need for an evaluation will be discussed during the initial phone consultation.
Do I need a referral for an evaluation or services?
No referral is needed. Kirkpatrick Speech is able to see students without a doctor's prescription.
Do you work with homeschooling families?
Yes! Kirkpatrick Speech is happy to collaborate with families who educate their children at home.
Many children with executive function skills challenges or dyslexia do not receive the support they need in school, so we are excited to partner with parents who homeschool to provide specialized therapy for dyslexia, reading and writing, speech, language, and executive functioning skills.
My child is not eligible for services at school. Can my child still receive services from you?
Yes! Because Kirkpatrick Speech is not required to follow the eligibility guidelines established by the state's Department of Public Instruction, parents and therapists partner together to determine what type of service is needed and the frequency of sessions.

How do I get started?
Contact Kirkpatrick Speech to schedule a complimentary phone consultation to discuss concerns you have about your child's speech-language, reading/literacy, or academic skills. During the consultation, we will determine together what type of assessment is needed and discuss a schedule of services (including the start date!).
My child is having trouble reading. How are your services different than working with a dyslexia tutor or getting outside tutoring from a teacher?
Speech-language pathologists have specialized knowledge and clinical experience in working with all aspects of language. While many teachers have received training in specific reading programs or methods used at their school, they typically have not received specialized training in listening comprehension, oral language, higher-level language (such as how to understand the "big picture"), and phonological skills (such as rhyming or identifying sounds within a spoken word). These language skills are necessary to develop good literacy skills for all children especially those with dyslexia who need extra tutoring. Speech therapists are language specialists and can assess and treat all these skills using evidence-based practices, so essentially, we go beyond what a reading tutor can provide...and help a student find success with reading and writing!
